FRIENDS OF THE EARTH
Saffron Walden & District
|
We are a group of nearly 100 people from all different backgrounds and we all have something in common. We want a thriving world for everyone. That means having a healthy natural environment, a fair economy and a world where everyone’s needs are met, now and in the long run.
FIX THE FOOD CHAIN CAMPAIGN
We want a healthy planet, planet-friendly farming and rainforest-free food
Friends of the Earth is currently running three national campaigns, Fix the Food Chain, International Climate and Get Serious About CO2. We are particularly involved with the Fix the Food Chain campaign. The current focus of the Fix the Food Chain campaign is to persuade the Government to enact the Sustainable Livestock Bill, which is being proposed as a private members bill. We have recently held a stall in Saffron Walden market square gathering signatures from the public to send to Sir Alan Haselhurst and other local MPs to ask them to support the Sustainable Livestock Bill when it receives its second reading in Parliament on 12 November 2010. Pictures of some of the students from Saffron Walden County High School who joined us and spiritedly donned cow suits for the morning are below.
For further information on the Fix the Food Chain campaign, please visit the relevant section of the national Friends of the Earth website. A more detailed briefing sheet setting out the reasons for the campaign can be found here and a copy of the draft Sustainable Livestock Bill can be found here.

What We Are Working On
Right now we are concentrating on the proposed Tesco and Sainsbury's supermarket developments; on housing policy and the avoidance of local overdevelopment; ways to keep climate change from spiralling out of control; energy conservation and renewable energy; waste disposal, recycling and composting (as opposed to incineration); and making sure our food and the way it is produced is good for all.
These might seem like lots of big issues but they are all connected. We need to think globally and act locally. We know we can make a difference if we work together.

Our Methods
These range from taking part in national Friends of the Earth campaigns to joining local environmental initiatives in order to play an active part in formulating local policies. We organise meetings and informal discussions, we take part in local exhibitions and, most important, make sure our views on environmental and housing policies/plans are put forward both at the consultation stage and later, especially if any inquiry takes place.
We welcome new members - our annual subscription is £5, £3 for the unwaged and £7 for a family. We have informal monthly meetings when we discuss what needs to be done.
Campaigning costs money as well as time. If you don't wish to join as an active member, but would like to support us, donations are always welcome!
